The Light from Above

I woke up this morning to Amanda and Nicki’s excitement. Nicki said that something big happened last night after I fell asleep and she called for Amanda to come in our room to explain it all. To back track a little, the first night we were in Costa Rica Nicki claimed there was a crawl space or some sort of a room above our beds. She freaked out because the light was on in this “room” and all of a sudden it turned off. Well, I went to bed last night and apparently Nicki was calling my name but I was out cold. So, she then resorted to having Amanda come check it out and Amanda claims that everything Nicki says is true. Nicki said that the light was on and she continued lying in bed watching it because she was too scared to fall asleep. She then said that after about twenty minutes this light went off. Nicki was so convinced that there was something above our beds that she asked our host mom this morning at breakfast who looked at her like she was crazy. Nicki is still 100% sure that all of this is true and she told me to “just wait for tonight” when the light is on. So…I guess this story is to be continued.

Finn was kind enough to give us her umbrella
while she shared with her sister!
Other exciting events that happened today included our first day of school. Traffic was light on the way to class because the President from China is visiting and it is considered a holiday. Schools, stores and banks are closed today (Monday) and tomorrow (Tuesday). Once we got to our university we were divided into groups based on our level of Spanish. Most groups have somewhere between four and six people which allows for a lot of one-on-one time and personal attention. For the first two hours we take a grammar class and for the second two hours we have conversation class. In-between classes we have a 15 minute break and the school provides us with coffee and and cookies. One interesting fact I learned today is that if a person were to get into a car wreck or if a pedestrian was walking and got hit by a car and passed away people paint a heart in the street or sidewalk at the place where the accident occurred. After class today we went out and explored a little bit. It had rained pretty hard during class for a good 45 minutes. Before exploring we decided to drop our belongings off at our house so that way if we got mugged all our stuff wouldn’t be gone. By accident, Nicki, Amanda and I all forgot to bring our umbrellas with us. At first when it started down-pouring the three of us thought it was ironic and said we would never forget our umbrellas again. However, after having to walk for awhile in the rain on route to our house all the while getting drenched it became not so fun.

Luciana!!! :)
We had a special little surprise tonight: Luciana (the granddaughter). She is absolutely ADORABLE!!!!! It was so precious watching our host parents care for their granddaughter. They are the sweetest people and love her to death. Our host dad cracked me up earlier tonight when I told him “tiene la más bonita nieta del mundo.” (You have the prettiest granddaughter in the world.) He responded by telling me all her good looks come from him! :) The rest of the evening was spent playing with Luciana and then talking and playing hearts with the girls. I cannot believe how well all five of us mesh. At first, I was a little apprehensive about how everything was going to go down. However, now it just feels like I have four amazing sisters! Liz works as a Spanish teacher at a local school and is married. Jenn is going to be a senior and is majoring in Elementary Education and Spanish just like me! They are the awesome girls and I feel so blessed to be living with them.

Well…it’s time to hit the hay and see whether or not the mysterious light comes back!
